My Favourite Things To Do in Bruges (+ What You Can Miss)

With its fairy-tale charm, cobblestone streets, and dreamy canals, you canโ€™t help but fall for Brugesโ€™ timeless beauty.

But letโ€™s be honestโ€”figuring out the best things to do in Bruges to make the most of your visit can be a bit overwhelming. Thereโ€™s so much to see, so much history to soak in, and so many little surprises waiting to be discovered.

Growing up just 20 minutes from Bruges (with parents who worked in the heart of the city), Iโ€™ve spent many days exploring the iconic landmarks, and found the little spots where Bruges truly comes to life.

Whether itโ€™s your very first visit or youโ€™re coming back for more, this guide has everything you need to make your trip unforgettable.

Visitors walking toward the Belfry of Bruges in the historic city centre.

1. Start at Rozenhoedkaai (Quay of the Rosary)

If thereโ€™s one place that truly captures the charm of Bruges, itโ€™s Rozenhoedkaai. Known as one of the most picturesque spots in the city, itโ€™s where the canal reflects medieval buildings, cobbled streets, and quaint bridges in stunning detail.

Whether you visit at sunrise with its soft pastel hues, at sunset when the golden light bathes the scene, or after dark when the city lights shimmer on the water, Rozenhoedkaai never fails to impress.

Historically, this quay was a bustling center for rosary tradingโ€”hence the name. Today, itโ€™s a favorite starting point for canal tours and a must-visit spot for capturing beautiful photos.

TIP: Come early (before 10:00) to avoid the crowds!

2. Cruise Through the Canals

A canal boat tour in Bruges is non-negotiable, even if you have just a day in Bruges. All tours take the same route and cost the same, so pick a starting pointโ€”we went with Stael Boat Company near St. Johnโ€™s Hospital and were very happy with the service and our guide.

Note that while the routes and prices are identical, each starting point belongs to a certain company, so you wonโ€™t be able to hop on and off. Tours run year-round, usually kicking off at 10:00 AM, but will be cancelled if the weather isnโ€™t good enough.

The 30-minute ride takes you from Minnewater Park to Van Eyck Square, passing landmarks like Brugesโ€™ oldest bridge (700 years old), St. Johnโ€™s Hospital, and St. Anna Church, home to the second-tallest brick tower in the world. Youโ€™ll also spot iconic stepped-gable houses with quirky details to ward off bad spirits.

No life vests are provided, but theyโ€™ve got umbrellas for unexpected rain showers. Guides speak multiple languages (Dutch, French, German, English, and Spanish), making it easy for everyone to follow along.

TIP: For a quieter ride, aim for the first or last boat of the dayโ€”or skip the crowds altogether with a Lamme Goedzak trip to Damme.

3. Stroll through the Market Square (Grote Markt)

Market Square is the heart of Bruges, surrounded by colorful gabled buildings that look straight out of a postcard. Itโ€™s the spot to grab a Belgian waffle, sip a local beer, or just people-watch. The Belfry Tower looms over it all, giving the square a dramatic backdrop.

Youโ€™ll probably find yourself here more than onceโ€”itโ€™s where most trips around the city start.

If youโ€™re there on a Wednesday morning, check out the market for fresh produce and local craftsโ€”itโ€™s a great way to soak up some local flavor.

Donโ€™t miss the statues of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, two hometown heroes who shaped the cityโ€™s history. And the Historium, one of my favorite attractions in Bruges.

4. Pedal Your Way Around Bruges

Biking is hands down the best way to explore the area around Bruges. The city is super bike-friendly, with scenic paths along canals and routes that take you to places youโ€™d probably miss on foot. Plus, renting a bike lets you cover way more ground, from iconic landmarks to quiet green spaces.

One popular ride is along the Damme Canal, leading to a charming little village just outside the city. Or, explore Brugesโ€™ outskirts to check out its windmills and peaceful parks. Start early to skip the crowds and enjoy the city as it wakes upโ€”itโ€™s totally worth it.

Youโ€™ll find plenty of rental shops with affordable rates and maps, so thereโ€™s no excuse not to hop on two wheels. Itโ€™s a fun, easy way to see a different side of Bruges and youโ€™ll avoid the many tourists as a bonus!

5. Zoom Around in a Rickshaw

Not into walking or biking? No problem. A rickshaw tour is a fun and laid-back way to explore Bruges. Tours are super flexibleโ€”you can choose from 30 minutes, an hour, or two hours. We went with the 1-hour option, and it was just the right amount of time.

The rickshaw itself is electric, seats up to three people, and is surprisingly smooth and quiet. Our guide, who was a 16-year-old student, was fantastic! They knew their stuff and shared fun facts and history at every stop.

Speaking of stops, youโ€™ll hit all the major sights: Market Square, Rozenhoedkaai, Boniface Bridge, Minnewater Park, Beguinage, and more. At each one, youโ€™ll have time to snap some photos and hear a bit about its story. This is a great option if youโ€™re exploring Bruges with kidsโ€”it was a big hit with ours!

Itโ€™s also an eco-friendly and cheaper alternative to the classic carriage rides. For the same โ‚ฌ70, you get an hour on the rickshaw instead of just 30 minutes in a carriage. Plus, itโ€™s more interactive since you can hop out at each stop.

The rickshaw tour is an absolute blast and one of the most enjoyable ways to see Bruges. I highly recommended it if you prefer a laid-back way to soak up the city!

6. Discover History and Healing at St. Johnโ€™s Hospital

St. Johnโ€™s Hospital is a massive medieval site with a calm vibe thatโ€™s a stark contrast to Brugesโ€™ busy streets. Inside, youโ€™ll explore the old hospital, apothecary, and a medicinal herb garden, all at your own pace.

Entry to the site is free and youโ€™ll find some great restaurants at the waterfront โ€“ so whether or not you plan on visiting the museum, make sure to stop by just to soak up the atmosphere.

With 1 ticket, you can visit both the hospital and the pharmacy, but the latter takes just 10 minutes or so.

The main museum, the hospital, is located in a gorgeous church and is worth visiting for its location alone. Video guides dive into the intense history of medieval healthcareโ€”surgeries without anesthesia and a big focus on mortality. Itโ€™s fascinating but not for the squeamish.

For kids, thereโ€™s a play area with doctor kits and lab coats, plus an audio tour that makes it feel like a game. Sensitive kids might find the themes overwhelming, though (our eldest was very uncomfortable!).

Donโ€™t miss the attic, where rotating exhibits offer something extraโ€”ours focused on climate change and the dodoโ€™s extinction. Itโ€™s a must for history lovers, but be ready for some heavy topics.

7. Find Your Zen at Minnewater Lake

Minnewater Lake, also called the “Lake of Love,” is one of the most serene spots in Bruges. According to legend, couples who cross the bridge here are destined to stay together forever, which might explain why itโ€™s such a romantic hotspot. But even if romance isnโ€™t on the agenda, the calm waters, weeping willows, and scenic views make it a perfect escape from the city crowds.

The lake is surrounded by Minnewater Park, a peaceful green space ideal for a leisurely walk, a quiet picnic, or just sitting on a bench soaking in the tranquil vibes. Youโ€™ll likely spot swans gliding across the waterโ€”these graceful birds are an iconic symbol of Bruges.

Keep an eye out for the Minnewater Castle, a picturesque building at the edge of the lake, and the Poertoren, a historic tower once used as a gunpowder storehouse.

The park is located next to the Beguinage, so make sure to combine your visit with a stroll around the peaceful courtyard.

8. Experience Medieval Bruges at the Historium

If history museums make you yawn, the Historium will change your mind. This immersive attraction uses storytelling and interactive exhibits to bring medieval Bruges to life. At its heart is a 5D experience that tells a love story set in the 15th century, complete with sights, sounds, and even smells to immerse you in the tale.

The Historium balances immersive education and entertainment, perfect for families with kids or anyone who wants to learn about Brugesโ€™ past without a textbook. They even offer a VR experience if youโ€™re looking for something a little more high-tech.

Donโ€™t miss the viewing platform that offers views of Market Square and the Belfry. Itโ€™s a great spot to appreciate the city from above.

TIP: not for the faint of heart, but the view from the Historium Tower (different than the viewing platform, buy separate tickets!) is spectacular (and better than the Belfry).

TICKETS | Historium Story + Exhibition is โ‚ฌ21 pp (regular tickets). Add-ons or separate tickets for the VR & the Tower.
HOURS | Daily from 10:00 to 18:00
LOCATION | Markt 1, 8000 Bruges

9. Wander Around Burg Square

Burg Square is a quieter, more sophisticated alternative to Market Square, but itโ€™s no less impressive. This historic square is home to some of Brugesโ€™ most striking buildings, including the Gothic-style City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The whole place oozes regal elegance, like itโ€™s been waiting centuries just for you to wander in.

If you need a place to pause and reflect during your visit, this is where you should go. Go for a leisurely stroll and admire the intricate details of the architecture.

10. Marvel at the Church of Our Lady

Brugesโ€™ Church of Our Lady is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Seriously, you canโ€™t miss itโ€”its spire is visible from all over the city. Its 115.6-meter tower is the third-tallest brick building in the world. Inside, youโ€™ll find Michelangeloโ€™s Madonna and Child, one of the artistโ€™s rare works to leave Italy.

Take your time wandering through the churchโ€”thereโ€™s so much to see. The stained-glass windows are works of art come to life, the altars are wonderfully dramatic, and the ancient tombs have a haunting beauty.

The peaceful atmosphere inside offers a welcome escape from the cityโ€™s hustle and bustle. Even if youโ€™re not an art or architecture buff, the sheer scale and craftsmanship are enough to leave you in awe.

If youโ€™ve got some extra time, drop by the Gruuthuse Museum next door. Itโ€™s packed with fascinating artefacts and art that give you a peek into Brugesโ€™ past. Together, the church and museum make for a culturally enriching morning or afternoon.

Pick your favourite type of melted chocolate, stir it into warm milk, and voilร ! You have the ultimate treat on a chilly day.

Head upstairs to the tearoom, a cozy hideaway with rustic vibes that makes you feel right at home. Downstairs, youโ€™ll find a shop packed with truffles, pralines, and other chocolatey delights to take home.

But donโ€™t just grab your drink and dash! Pair it with one of their incredible handmade pastries and soak in the ambiance. Itโ€™s the perfect little pick-me-up before you dive back into exploring the city.

12. Visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood

This small but astonishing basilica houses one of Brugesโ€™ most treasured relics: a vial said to contain the blood of Christ.

The basilica is divided into two chapels: The Romanesque lower chapel is simple and solemn, while the Gothic upper chapel is all about vibrant colours and intricate details. Both are stunning in their own way, so take your time exploring.

Every day, thereโ€™s a short ceremony where the relic is displayed. Itโ€™s a moving experience, whether or not youโ€™re religious. Even if you skip the ceremony, the beautiful stained glass and serene atmosphere are enough to make it a memorable stop on your Bruges itinerary.

Plus, itโ€™s prime location in Burg Square makes it easy to pair with other nearby attractions!

13. Walk Among Windmills

Brugesโ€™ windmills are perched along the cityโ€™s old ramparts, but theyโ€™re definitely worth the trek. There are four to explore, dating back centuries and were once crucial for grinding grain. Today, theyโ€™re an iconic part of Brugesโ€™ landscape.

The walk itself is lovely, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light casts a golden glow over the area. If youโ€™re visiting in the warmer months, you can even climb inside some of the windmills for a closer look at their inner workings.

The open green spaces and quiet atmosphere make this a relaxing break from Brugesโ€™ busier attractions. Pack a snack and enjoy the views of the canals and countryside.

Located in a quiet part of the city, this museum walks you through the cityโ€™s lace-making heritage and the craftsmanship behind these delicate creations.

The real showstopper? Watching local lace-makers in action. Seeing their skill, patience, and precision up close is nothing short of mesmerizing. Youโ€™ll walk away with a new appreciation for this centuries-old craft..

If youโ€™re feeling inspired, stop by the museum shop and grab a handcrafted lace piece as a special keepsake!

Brugesโ€™ Old Town is the kind of place where getting lost feels like a win. The cobblestone streets, quaint bridges, and charming medieval houses make it an absolute delight to wander.

One spot youโ€™ll definitely want to stumble upon is the Bonifacius Bridge. Itโ€™s easily one of the cityโ€™s most romantic spots. Along the way, youโ€™ll find boutique shops selling everything from artisan chocolates to lace.

Thereโ€™s no need to rush hereโ€”enjoy some coffee, people-watch, or just wander aimlessly. Thereโ€™s magic in not knowing exactly where youโ€™re headed.

Itโ€™s especially magical in spring when the courtyard blooms with daffodils. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, peek inside the small museum, or simply sit and enjoy the quiet.

23. Unwind at the Zwin Nature Park

When Brugesโ€™ cobblestone streets start wearing on your feet, the Zwin is just the change of pace you need. This nature park near Knokke is affectionately called the โ€œinternational bird airport,โ€ and for good reason.

Itโ€™s a hotspot for migratory birds and a dream come true for nature lovers. Youโ€™re in for plenty of bird-spotting opportunities and even up-close encounters with storks.

Whatโ€™s great about the Zwin is that itโ€™s not just for hardcore nature enthusiasts. Thereโ€™s an interactive museum thatโ€™s perfect for families (or anyone whoโ€™s a kid at heart).

They hand you this cool electronic pass that assigns you a bird to follow throughout the museum. At each station, you scan your pass and sometimes play a game to learn more about your bird. The quirkiest highlight is the digital experience of flying like a bird and hatching an egg!

Outside, thereโ€™s the Hut Walk, a 1.5-km loop-shaped trail thatโ€™s shaded and dotted with climbing structures, play areas, and plenty of benches. Itโ€™s a great spot to slow down and soak in the scenery while the kids burn off some energy.

If youโ€™re up for more exploring, the park has three others trails spanning 2 km each. One of them is a barefoot path that really makes you feel connected to nature, but you can wear shoes if youโ€™d prefer.

The Zwin Nature Park features tidal mudflats, marshes, and sandbanks, serving as a vital stopover for migratory birds.

One thing to know before you go: this place is big! We spent about 2.5 hours here and only managed to cover the Hut Walk, the observation platform, and part of the museum. Honestly, itโ€™s the kind of spot where you could easily spend half a dayโ€”or even the whole day if youโ€™re really into it.

Thereโ€™s a large gift shop and a cafรฉ with a playground for snack breaks. In summer, there are extra activities for kids like origami owl folding. They also host temporary exhibits, and during our visit, we were lucky to catch the “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” showcase.

The Zwin Nature Park is definitely worth the trip if you have some extra time in Bruges or are heading toward the coast. Just donโ€™t forget your binoculars!

Damme is like Brugesโ€™ laid-back cousinโ€”a quaint village just a short bike ride or boat trip away. Known for its charming streets, antique shops, and windmill, Damme is a perfect day trip for those who want a quieter, more relaxed vibe.

One of the best ways to get there is on the Lamme Goedzak paddle steamer, which runs during the warmer months. The ride is an experience in itself, with gorgeous views as you cruise between Bruges and Damme.

Make sure your camera or phone is ready, as Damme is one of the most photogenic spots near Bruges. Itโ€™s an easy and rewarding escape that lets you experience a slower pace of life.

25. Relive the Stories of WWI in Flanders Fields

If youโ€™re up for a more reflective trip, consider dedicating a day to exploring Flanders Fields. This region, lying across the provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders, was the site of some of the most devastating battles of World War I.

Start in Ypres at the In Flanders Fields Museum for an interactive overview of the war. Then visit the Menin Gate Memorial, an iconic arch bearing the names of over 54,000 soldiers whose bodies were never recovered.

Every evening at 8:00 PM, they hold the Last Post Ceremony as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Itโ€™s not just about paying respects but also about gaining a deeper understanding of the human stories behind the war.

Flanders Fields is scattered with UNESCO-listed memorials and cemeteries, each with its own story. Donโ€™t skip places like Tyne Cot Cemetery or Essex Farm, where John McCrae wrote the popular war poem โ€œIn Flanders Fields.โ€ To make the most out of your day, rent a car or book a Flanders Fields Battlefield Tour.

Optional Attractions: Things in Bruges You Can Skip

Bruges is packed with incredible sights, but not everything lives up to the hype. Here are a couple you might want to skipโ€”or approach with managed expectations.

Climbing the Belfry might sound like a bucket-list activity, but itโ€™s not for everyone.

The 366 steps to the top are steep and narrow, so itโ€™s not exactly friendly for kids or anyone who might struggle with tight spaces. Plus, the constant flow of people going up and down makes it feel more like a workout than a fun activity.

While the carillon bells and music box-like tunes add some charm, the view from the top is not as good as expected. Thereโ€™s no open platformโ€”just a view through mesh screens that block most of the iconic Market Square below.

Unless itโ€™s a perfectly clear day and youโ€™re itching to glimpse the sea in the distance, this one might not be worth the cashless ticket price.

Belfry of Bruges historic tower.

Stadhius looks grand from the outside, but the inside is underwhelming for the price.

The ground floor is free, but the paid rooms upstairs donโ€™t offer much bang for your buck. The exhibits are sparse, and for what youโ€™re paying, there are better ways to spend your time in Bruges.

Like the Belfry, itโ€™s also cashless, so be prepared if you decide to visit. But honestly, a quick look at the facade might be enough to check this one off your list.

Bruges Wrap-Up

Bruges is a city Iโ€™ve grown up with, yet itโ€™s one that never stops surprising me. I hope this guide gives you a starting point to explore its charm, history, and little quirks. Take your time, get a little lost, and make it your ownโ€”because thatโ€™s when Bruges truly shines.

BELGIUM TRAVEL PLANNING RESOURCESย

Getting to Belgium: Fly into one of the main international airports: Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi Brussels South Airport (CRL). Take an international train to Brussels South Station. Or take a ferry to Dover or The Netherlands, then drive or take the train to Belgium.

Getting Around: For the major destinations, the train is by far the best option. You can book your train tickets here. If you’d like to visit smaller places, the most convenient way would be to rent a car. We always use Discover cars, they compare all the rental companies and give you the best rates.

Accommodation: Booking.com is the most popular accommodation platform in Belgium. It’s what I use every single time.

Guided tours: Use Get Your Guide or Viator to find fun tours in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. Or Guruwalk to find free walking tours in multiple destinations.

If this helped you plan your adventure, a coffee would go a long way in fueling my next guide! ๐Ÿ˜‰
