20 Fun Things To Do in Brussels

Stuck on what to include in your Brussels itinerary? I get itโ€”deciding whatโ€™s worth your time in a new city can be overwhelming, especially in a place as vibrant as Brussels. While itโ€™s got its own appeal, Iโ€™ll be honest: Brussels isnโ€™t my favourite Belgian city (we have more charming ones!).

But, as someone whoโ€™s been here countless times, Iโ€™ve found plenty of fun things to do that really capture what Brussels is all about. Whether youโ€™re looking to dive into history, sample famous Belgian treats, or just get a feel for the city, Iโ€™ve got you covered. And with Brusselsโ€™ central location, you can easily hop on a train to see more of Belgium once you’ve ticked these highlights off your list.

TIPS FOR BRUSSELS

  • The Brussels Card: if you’re planning on visiting a couple of museums, you’re best off with a Brussels Card. This will allow you entry into no less than 49 museums for a fixed price. The Brussels Card is available in a 24-hour version (โ‚ฌ29), a 48-hour version (โ‚ฌ37) and a 72-hour version (โ‚ฌ45). Order your Brussels Card here!
  • International travellers: Brussels is served by Brussels Airport or Charleroi Airport. Visitors coming by train will arrive at Brussels South Station (Brussel-Zuid/Bruxelles-Midi). Book your plane tickets here or click here to book international train tickets!
  • National travellers: the easiest way to get to and from other Belgian cities is by train. Book your train tickets to Bruges, Antwerp, Ghent or other places here!
  • Safety: Brussels is a safe place to visit solo, as a female traveller, queer person or family. Take the usual precautions against pickpocketing though and avoid walking the streets on your own in the dead of night.
  • Best time to visit: Brussels can be visited throughout the year. It’s best to bring or buy an umbrella as rain is always a possibility. The summer months can get pretty hot though in the city, so we’d recommend a trip to Brussels in autumn, winter or spring!

Right in the centre of Brussels, youโ€™ll find the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site thatโ€™s truly a sight to behold. It stands as one of Europeโ€™s most spectacular squares, thanks to its marvellous architecture and intricate guild houses. Look closely and youโ€™ll spot representations from old tradesโ€”from bakers to brewers and tailorsโ€”who shaped the cityโ€™s history. Insiderโ€™s tip: Visit at night when the buildings are lit upโ€”itโ€™s magical!

The centrepiece of the Grand Place is the Town Hall, an impressive Gothic building from the early 15th century. Its tall spire is topped with a statue of Saint Michael, the patron saint of Brussels. The interior of the Town Hall is equally fascinating, with tapestries, sculptures, and grand rooms that reflect centuries of Brusselsโ€™ history. Guided tours are available if youโ€™d like to learn more about the buildingโ€™s storied past.

If you happen to visit in August, donโ€™t miss the Flower Carpet Festival. Every two years, the entire square is covered in a colourful tapestry of fresh flowers. Itโ€™s a spectacular sight, and the view from the Town Hall balcony during the festival is unforgettable.

Not every city has a penchant for cheeky statues, but Brusselsโ€™ famous Manneken Pisโ€”a statue of a little man peeingโ€”has been amusing visitors since the 17th century. This 55.5-cm (24-inch) bronze figure isnโ€™t just famous for his mischievous pose, heโ€™s also known for his vast wardrobe of costumes, with outfits donated from cultures and organizations around the world. Fun fact: He never wears the same costume twice, and all of his outfits are preserved and displayed in a dedicated museum at the Brussels City Museum.

Manneken Pis isnโ€™t alone, though. You can find his โ€œsisterโ€ statue, Jeanneke Pis, in an alley near the Delirium Cafรฉ on Impasse de la Fidรฉlitรฉ. Sheโ€™s just as quirky as her brother, depicting a little girl squatting and peeing with a cheeky grin. Then thereโ€™s Zinneke Pis, a statue of a dog lifting its leg, located on the corner of Rue des Chartreux and Rue du Vieux Marchรฉ aux Grains. Tracking down these three statues adds a fun twist to exploring Brussels, and highlights the cityโ€™s playful side and love for offbeat art.

Thereโ€™s never a shortage of waffle trucks in Brussels, but if you want a taste of the cityโ€™s best, go to Maison Dandoy. This family-run biscuiterie is legendary for a reason. They have been serving up authentic Belgian waffles and traditional biscuits since 1829. You can enjoy quintessential Belgian treats at several locations across the city, including their charming tea room in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert.

Their waffles come in two styles: the light and crispy Brussels waffle and the denser, caramelized Liรจge waffle. But hereโ€™s a local secret: Belgians usually skip the extravagant toppingsโ€”thatโ€™s a tourist thing! Traditionally, Brussels waffles are enjoyed with just a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a bit of whipped cream, while Liรจge waffles are eaten plain but piping hot. Try one the Belgian way, or go for extra toppings if youโ€™re feeling adventurous. Either way, Maison Dandoyโ€™s waffles are a must-try!

12. SIP ON WORLD-FAMOUS BELGIAN BEER

I actually had my first-ever beer at the Grand Place while researching for this blog. I wanted a nice photo with a local brew, so I picked a fruity one to ease me in, andโ€”to my surpriseโ€”I actually liked it!

If youโ€™re ready to dive in, Delirium Cafรฉ has one of the biggest selections in the worldโ€”over 2,000 options on tap! If you prefer a more traditional experience, visit Cantillon Brewery, where they make lambic beer using old-fashioned methods. Or, if youโ€™re into craft beer, Brussels Beer Project is another cool spot that puts creative twists on classic Belgian brews.
