21 Things to do in Bruges with Kids (and have an awesome time)!

Bruges might be Belgium’s picture-perfect tourist destination, but is it a good place to visit with kids?

Shot from Bruges canals with overlaying text in burgundy "things to do in Bruges with kids".

I grew up near Bruges and have visited many times. Just recently, I spent a week here with my own kids, exploring the city from a family perspective.

In this guide, Iโ€™ll share my experiences and advice to help you have a great family trip. We’ll discuss anything from the best things to do in Bruges with kids to family-friendly hotels and restaurants.

Let’s get started!

๐Ÿ…Our Top Pick: Go on a Rickshaw Tour! My kiddos thought this was the highlight of our trip to Bruges.

Top things to do in Bruges with kids

1. Learn all about chocolate @choco-story museum

Bowls with chocolate chips that you can taste.
All you can eat chocolates at the Choco-Story Museum in Bruges!
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ16 (regular), โ‚ฌ14 (12-18yo, student, 65+), โ‚ฌ10 (3-11yo), free (<3yo)
  • HOURS | Daily from 10:00 to 18:00
  • LOCATION | Wijnzakstraat 2 (5′ to the market square)

๐Ÿ˜ Book your Choco Story Museum ticket or your Chocolate Workshop + Museum ticket here

If thereโ€™s one thing typical for Belgium, itโ€™s chocolate. Kids will love learning all about the delicious treats in this museum. An interactive tour lets you discover all about the evolution and production of chocolate.

At the end of your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to see how pralines are made. And of course, the best part is that you can try as many chocolates as you want (use this for bribing your kid(s) if they don’t feel like coming)!

There are chocolate workshops specifically for kids, but they have to be booked privately which might be a little too expensive for the average family visiting Bruges with children.

However, you can book a 1-hour small-group chocolate workshop – it’s suitable with kids from age 6 and up. You’ll create and decorate chocolate lollipops that you get to take home. It’s a short but fun experience.

OVERALL FEELING | The museum isn’t very spacious so it can feel cramped. It’s also not possible to bring a stroller or wheelchair. It’s not the most “wow” museum, but there are quite a few interactive games plus an audio guide for kids. The free chocolate at the end makes it worth it though. We haven’t done the workshop ourselves but it gets great reviews from families because it’s short and hands-on.

2. Take a splash at the subtropical pool

  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ15.20 (regular), โ‚ฌ14.20 (65+; differently abled), โ‚ฌ12.20 (4-11yo), โ‚ฌ3 (6mo-3yo) – babies under 6mo NOT allowed (!)
  • HOURS | Daily with different opening hours. Typically from 9:00-19:00 during the weekend, 13:30 to 21:00 during school holidays, and 16:00 to 21:00 on weekdays. Check all opening hours here.
  • LOCATION | Doornstraat 110
  • GETTING THERE | Take bus nr.3 or 30 from the station or ‘t Zand (the main bus stop). Get off at Sint-Andries Zwembad (bus 30) or Sint Andries Boeverbos (bus 3). It’s a 20 to 25 min drive. Going on foot is also possible and should take you about 40-45 minutes from the station.

๐Ÿ˜ Make sure to book your ticket online (buying at the door is โ‚ฌ1 more expensive + you risk the pool being full)

While Bruges is located not too far from the sea, the weather is hardly ever good enough to have actual beach and water fun, and a tropical feeling is out of the question anyway.

However, I’ve got great news, because Bruges has its own tropical swimming complex: LAGO Olympia. We spent a morning here and I have to say that time flew by!

The biggest kids will love the 3 large slides that allow them to race against each other or to go down the pipe in a tube. The white water course is also a lot of fun for those kids who already know how to swim well.

But all those adrenaline-pumping activities can be done with little ones as well, you just have to hold them carefully. Our toddler LOVED the wild rides!

But there’s more: you can find a wave pool, an outdoor pool, a steam bath, a barrel sauna, and a couple of kidsโ€™ pools specifically designed for little ones. In fact, splashing around in those is one of the best things to do in Bruges with toddlers! Our almost 3yo couldn’t get enough!

You can definitely spend a half or even a full day here! Especially since you can access the restaurant from inside the pool.

OVERALL FEELING | A pool might not be your first idea when visiting Bruges but if it’s rainy or you’re in need of a kidproof activity, this subtropical pool is a great idea. There’s a ton to do, it’s well kept, has a nice lounge area and it’s easy to oversee. The family dressing rooms and family lockers are a great bonus. We loved it.

3. Go Back in time @ the historium

Balcony in the Historium with the view of the city - how many days in Bruges?
The view from the balcony of Historium Bruges.
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ22 (regular), โ‚ฌ18 (65+; differently abled; students; youth (12-18), โ‚ฌ14 (5-12yo), free (0-4yo) – prices for Story + Exhibition (with VR = + โ‚ฌ6 / with Tower = + โ‚ฌ5)
  • HOURS | Daily from 10:30-18:00
  • LOCATION | Market Square

๐Ÿ˜ Book your skip-the-line ticket for the Historium here

If you’re looking for an experience beyond the typical museum, the Historium is where you want to go. Consider it a time machine that will transport you back to the Bruges of the famous painter Jan van Eyck.

The museum has 5 different sections and is available in 10 (!) languages:

  • Historium Story: a 4D experience where you’ll follow the love story of Jan van Eyck’s apprentice. Imagine different theme rooms with movie scenes and special effects.
  • Historium Virtual Reality: Experience flying over Medieval Bruges (kids: 6+)
  • Historium Exhibition: an interactive exhibition with an option to follow the Family Trail (available in multiple languages). Many activities are fun and interactive (marked with an owl sticker to signal it’s a kids-proof activity).
  • The Panoramic Deck: from one of the exhibition rooms, make your way to the deck for a great view over the Market Square.
  • Historium Tower: Thrill-seekers can climb the 35m (115 ft) high Tower for a 360-degree view over the city. (only kids >140cm (4’7”).
  • Wonderful Water Hall: The latest addition in 2025 and located on the very site where the original building once stood, this section is dedicated to the legendary Waterhalle, which was once the largest covered harbor in Europe. Visitors will find this section particularly captivating because of the exhibitions here.

OVERALL FEELING | Apparently you either love or hate the Historium experience, but I honestly have no idea why you wouldn’t like it. I absolutely LOVED it. I did this with my 1yo toddler (in the baby carrier/no strollers allowed) and regret not bringing my daughter. BUT it’s very expensive. And it might be (too) scary for little kids (it’s not a scary story but the special effects & sounds are quite impressive). You can read my full review here.

4. Take a day trip to Zwin Nature Park

A picture of the vast landscape of Zwin Nature Park.
Perfect view of Zwin Nature Park, one of the sites you will visit when you book a Bruges historical day tour.
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ12 (regular), โ‚ฌ11 (students), โ‚ฌ6 (6-17yo), free (0-5yo) – book 1 day upfront for cheaper tickets
  • HOURS | Sat-Sun from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter; Tue-Sun from 10:00-18:00 in summer. Daily during the Flanders school holidays. Check the schedule here.
  • LOCATION | Graaf Lรฉon Lippensdreef 8, Knokke-Heist
  • GETTING THERE | You can reach ZWIN by train (Bruges-Knokke) + bus (nr. 12) (about 90 minutes), by car (35 minutes), or by bicycle (90 minutes).

๐Ÿ˜ Book your ticket for ZWIN Nature Park here

ZWIN Nature Park is located in Knokke-Heist, right on the border between Belgium and The Netherlands. Itโ€™s the last part of the Belgian coastline, so a day trip to ZWIN is also a perfect opportunity to add a couple of hours at the beach to your schedule.

The nature park is mostly a learning centre with both covered and open-air areas.

The Exhibition Room is the most museum-like and gives you an awesome interactive experience. At the entrance, you get assigned one of the 10 migratory birds that you can see at the park. Youโ€™ll follow their journey from North to South and through life. Another cool thing that can be done is the flying simulator.

The Observation Centre allows you to watch the birds on the Zwin Plain, while in the Cabin Trail, you get to learn lots of different things from close-by in each hut (feeding, ringing, etc.)

OVERALL FEELING | My family loved our visit to ZWIN Nature Park. We came after our toddler’s nap and seriously lacked in time to do everything (we were there for 3 hours). We took in the view at the panoramic tower, did the Cabin Trail (1.5 km/0.93 miles) and a small part of the museum. But there are 3 more hiking trails (2km (1.25 miles) each) including one barefoot trail and there’s a tea room with a playground. The museum was super fun since everything is interactive and the cabin trail has play and climbing gear and benches along the entire trail. You can definitely spend a half or even a full day here.

TIP: You can also explore ZWIN’s stunning older scenery together with some really charming villages by bike when you book a Bruges Historical Day Tour. Check rates & availability here.

5. Rent a bicycle and enjoy Bruges’ countryside

Bicycle in the shopping street of Bruges.
Locals and tourists alike use bicycle to go around Bruges.
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ38 (regular), โ‚ฌ36 (12-17yo), โ‚ฌ25 (6-11 yo), โ‚ฌ14 (0-5yo)
  • HOURS | Tour starts at 10:00am
  • MEETUP POINT| Historium Bruge Markt 1, 8000

๐Ÿ˜ Book your ticket for Bruges Bike Tour here

If you would like to give your kids a more active thing to do, renting a bicycle is a great idea!

You can definitely join a bike tour too, but rather than staying in the city centre (which you would do on the tour), I’d explore the countryside around the city.

There are many bike paths and flat roads winding through the Flemish polders, so you can have a relaxing ride without having to worry too much about traffic.

You can rent bicycles for 1 hour, 4 hours, or a day at Fietsen Populier, located at Mariastraat 26, Bruges.

Make your way to the coast, discover picturesque villages such as Lissewege and Damme, or visit one of the many castles in the area.

If your kids can’t bike themselves yet, rent a regular bicycle with a child’s seat or a ‘bakfiets’ (a bicycle with a large sitting place for kids in the front).

6. Do a beer tasting (yes, with kids!)

Two glasses of Belgian beers.
A Bruges beer experience should be on your to-do-list too!
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ13 (regular), โ‚ฌ8 (6-12yo), free (0-5yo)
  • HOURS | 10:00 to 17:00
  • LOCATION| Bruges Beer Museum

๐Ÿ˜ Book your ticket for Bruges Beer Tour here

Technically, this is not something that you can do *with* your kids, but rather *nearby* them.

Obviously, giving beer to kids is not a good idea, but you can bring them along to a beer tasting and let them explore the brewery while you enjoy some delicious Belgian brews. Brouwerij De Halve Maan is a great option for a beer tasting in Bruges.

During the tour, you will learn all about the brewing process and get to taste some of their delicious beers.

๐Ÿป The tour ends in the breweryโ€™s bar, where you can buy beer by the glass or enjoy a beer tasting.

If you have kids with you, they can explore the museum with a few interactive exhibits that are appropriate for kids of all ages.

Another option could be to go to the Bruges Beer Experience. Here you can find out more about the Belgian beer heritage.

The historical centre of Bruges is the perfect place to learn about beer, Trappist and abbey beers, various types of beer, and even things like food pairing.

For kids aged 5-12 years old, there’s also a Kids’ Tour where they can listen to or read an exciting story about the Bruges bear in ten different languages.

The museum is open from 10 am until 6 pm and is located in the Breidelstraat 3. You can hang out at the bar or visit the shop.

โœ๐Ÿผ Tip: There are lots of stairs so it might be more comfortable taking a baby carrier if you are visiting with a baby!

7. Create your own chocolate during a chocolate workshop (age 6+)

Expert chocolatier drizzling molten chocolate
Taste mouth-watering melted chocolate when you book a Chocolate Workshop.
  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ55 (regular), โ‚ฌ44 (12-16yo)
  • HOURS | 10:00 and 14:30
  • MEET UP POINT| Ezelstraat 98, 8000

๐Ÿ˜ Book your ticket for Chocolate Workshop here

What kid (or adult!) doesnโ€™t love chocolate? During a chocolate workshop at Choco-Story, you can learn all about the history of chocolate at the museum and even make your own chocolates!

But a minimum of 10 kids is required, so this is not the cheapest way to keep your kids busy but still very worth it!

The workshop is led by a professional chocolatier who will teach you all the skills you need to make your own delicious chocolate creations.

Kids will learn how to draw with chocolate, and make the chocolate lollies of the mascot “Choclala” with two kinds of chocolate and decorate them with nuts or candies.

๐Ÿซ At the end of the workshop, you will get to take home a box of your own handmade chocolates. Yum!

8. Chocolate walk

  • TICKETS | โ‚ฌ300 (regular), โ‚ฌ35 (7-17yo), โ‚ฌ1 (0-6yo)
  • HOURS | 10:00 to 16:30

This guided walk takes you through the medieval center of Bruges, highlighting key historical landmarks and stopping at some of the city’s best chocolate shops.

Your local guide will provide insights into both Bruges’ history and the chocolate-making process. At each shop, youโ€™ll meet the owners and enjoy tastings of at least eight different chocolates.

As you stroll among some of Bruges’s most gorgeous landmarks, be sure to take a look at this guide and pick out a thing of two from the Chocolate shops to smell, taste or even drink!

This tour is perfect for those who are curious about both the modern and historical eras of Bruges…and love chocolate!

  • HOURS | 10:30, 11:30, 14:00
  • MEET UP POINT| Grote Markt

๐Ÿ˜ Book your ticket for Bruges Architecture and Art Tour here

The belfry of Bruges is one thing not to be missed in Bruges! You can’t take a lift to the top of the tower so you need to climb the 366 steps to the top.

And as a reward, you get the most beautiful views over Bruges, especially over the Market.

Bear in mind that for small kids it can be quite difficult to get to the top, because of the steep spiral staircase.

We think it will also be hard to carry your little one if he/she gets tired.

While in the tower you can make a few stops. After 55 steps you reach the treasury, after 112 you reach the stone floor room, at 220 steps you are at the Great Bell.

Keep going and after 333 steps you will reach the Drum room, a few more steps (352) and you arrive in the Carilloneur’s room, and the final steps will give you the panoramic view over Bruges. he/she gets tired.

You can hear the Carillon Drum and Clocks ring every 15 minutes, which sounds quite impressive.

Maybe best to cover your ears and the ears of your little ones depending on where you are at that moment in the tower.

There are several displays and informational panels which will help you understand the meaning and history of the Belfry.

A beguinage is a community of religious women who live together without taking vows, and the beguinage of Bruges was founded in the 13th century.

And is part of the UNESCO world heritage site.

Nowadays it is still home to around 30 women, and it is a lovely spot for a quiet walk or to just sit and relax for a while.

There is a small playground for kids, but it is not the best playground to go to when in Bruges.

One of those spots is the windmill area just outside the city centre. The area is very picturesque, and it’s a great place to let the kids run around on the grass and take a picinic.

There are four windmills in total, and they are all located close to each other. If you have a Musea Brugge Card you can enter for free.

16. Take the slow boat to Charming Damme

Idyllic scene along the historic Damse Vaart canal in Damme, adorned with the graceful presence of the river boat 'Lamme Goedzak.

Just a short hop from Bruges, the medieval village of Damme makes for a genuinely lovely day out.

If the boat schedule works with your timing, take the slow river boat along the Brugesโ€“Sluis canal rather than cycling or driving โ€” it takes about 35 minutes each way and drifting through the flat, poplar-lined Flemish countryside is a good part of the experience.

In Damme itself, the Gothic town hall is worth a look, there are a handful of decent bookshops and cafรฉ terraces, and the whole place is small enough that you can take it in at a comfortable pace without feeling like you’re rushing through a checklist.

Horses and carriages in Bruges.
Carriages on the Markt Square of Bruges on a Christmas morning.

Discover Bruges in an unforgettable and romantic way.

Let one of the thirteen carriages take you on a tour through winding cobblestone roads, ancient bridges, majestic squares, and the tranquil Bruges canals while being accompanied by horses’ hooves gently clip-clopping along!

๐Ÿด The carriages leave from Market Square (on Wednesday mornings from Burg Square) and will take you past some of the highlights of Bruges, while the coachman tells you more about the places you see along the way.

A regular stop is near the Beguinage, where horses are given a short break and passengers can also stretch their legs. Your carriage ride ends on the Market Place.

Carriage rides in Bruges are similar to hailing a taxi. You wait at Market Square until an available carriage arrives, and then you can board and pay the driver directly in cash.

If you don’t see any carriages, it means they’re all currently occupied on another ride.

Usually, carriages are only available during daylight hours; however, during peak season or when weather conditions are favorable, carriages will also operate in the evening.

โ—๏ธ Note: for safety concerns pertaining to high temperatures (30ยฐC/86ยฐF or higher), no carriage rides will take place–this information will always be posted on Visit Brugge’s Facebook page.

Rides that leave from Market Square can’t be booked in advance, but if you’re looking to ride around town starting from a specific location (for example, your hotel or a restaurant), then you can make a direct request to the coachmen’s association.

The price per carriage will be โ‚ฌ60 with a maximum of 5 people.
