We might be a little biased, but we strongly believe that Belgium is well worth your time. You can spend weeks if not months and years exploring the stunning architecture and the tranquil nature.
But with every trip, of course, comes finding the right accommodation in Belgium. Whether you’re a backpacker whoโs travelling on a tight budget, a family looking for a relaxing spot to take the kids or a business traveller who likes to soak in a hot tub after a long day of work โ Belgium has something for everyone.
There is no shortage of accommodation options in Belgium, whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel or a more affordable option. However, finding the right place to stay can be a challenge, especially if you’re not familiar with the country.
That’s why we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to finding the best places to stay in Belgium, whether you’re looking for a mid-range option or a more budget-friendly option.
We’ll also give you some tips on what to look for when choosing accommodation in Belgium, so you can be sure you’re getting the best value for your money.
What to consider when looking for accommodation in Belgium?
When deciding where to stay in Belgium, there are a few things to consider.
The first depends on your Belgian itinerary. How long will you be staying? And how many times do you want to change location?
It’s entirely possible to stay in one major city and visit the rest by doing day trips. But it definitely has its charm to stay the night in each destination you’ll be visiting too.
The second consideration will be whether you want to be in the heart of your destination or a little outside of it.
There are pros and cons to both. If you want to be in the middle of the action, you’ll be close to all the major attractions. However, it can be more noisy and crowded.
If you stay outside of the city centre, you’ll have more peace and quiet, but you’ll have to travel to get to the sights.
The last thing to think about is your budget. There is a range of accommodation options available in Belgium, from camping to luxurious 5-star hotels.
Types of accommodation in Belgium
Hostels in Belgium
If you’re travelling to Belgium on a budget, your best option is to book a dorm bed in a hostel. Hostels are also a great way to meet other travellers and spend time together, so donโt miss out on the opportunity to socialise!
Each city has its fair share of hostels available. There are 2 types:
Youth Hostels in Belgium
There should also be at least one youth hostel (Dutch: jeugdherberg / French: auberge de jeunesse) in every major city. These hostels are members of Hostelling International, so don’t forget to purchase a membership here for advantages such as a 10% discount on all stays.
The Vlaamse Jeugdherbergen operates the 19 youth hostels in Flanders, while Les Auberges de Jeunesse de Wallonie does the same for the 10 in Wallonia. You can book hostels in Flanders here while you can check for Wallonia through this website.
You can usually choose between a bed in a (mixed or gender-specific) dorm room and a private room for a certain amount of people. These private rooms usually have a shared bathroom, but ensuites are sometimes available as well.
There are no age restrictions but the price goes up if you’re over 30. Children are welcome as well and will pay less.
A dorm bed will cost you around โฌ20-25. For a private room with an ensuite, that price will go up to about โฌ30-35 pp. Breakfast and linen are included in the rates, but towels (โฌ1,5 per towel) and city tax is not. You can also order a packed lunch and dinner at these hostels.
Private Hostels in Belgium
There are also plenty of non-HI hostels in every popular destination in Belgium. They usually provide great value for a low budget.
Hostels offer beds in male/female or mixed dorm rooms with lockers to put away your personal items safely. They often also have private rooms for smaller or larger groups.
Facilities often include wifi, a self-catering kitchen and washing machines. Breakfast is usually available at an extra (but budget) cost.
Average rates usually start around โฌ 25-30 for a dorm bed in the larger cities. If you prefer a private (double) room with a shared bathroom, you’ll pay roughly โฌ65. And if you’d rather stay in a double room with an ensuite bathroom, it will be about โฌ80-85 a night.
You can find and book Belgian hostels through Hostelworld.com or Hostelbookers.com.
Hotels in Belgium
Thereโs a wide variety of hotels on offer in every bigger Belgian city but also in many smaller towns.
Each hotel receives a number of stars according to the Benelux standard (Benelux is derived from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg). These range from 1 star to 5 stars. Every licensed hotel displays a blue sign with the number of stars the hotel has.
You can find Belgium hotels on any budget – from basic 1-star hotel rooms to super luxurious hotels with private pools or jacuzzis. Mind that prices will vary depending on the season and the demand during that time of year (during summer, Ostend will feature its highest prices, while city hotels in Brussels will set their rates at the lowest of the year)
Nowadays, breakfast is generally not included in the price. However, it’s often possible to book a room with breakfast for a discount price. Not all hotels offer breakfast, but most do. Breakfast is usually pretty expensive at โฌ15-20pp.
The most popular way to book hotels for a trip to Belgium is through Booking.com, itโs what most Belgians use themselves as well.
Bed & Breakfasts in Belgium
You can find a plethora of B&Bs in the entire country. From big cities to small villages, a bed & breakfast is one of the most popular types of accommodation in Belgium and that shows in the amount of B&Bโs there are.
This type of accommodation is small-scale, usually renting only one to five rooms and typically comes with breakfast included.
One of the best things about these kinds of places is the personal approach and family atmosphere while still getting all the privacy you need. It’s not a homestay where you’re sharing living spaces or are expected to interact much with the family living in the house.
Bed & Breakfast can be more basic or very luxurious and that will resemble in the price. Prices vary depending on the location but are usually somewhat similar to a mid-range hotel. Finding a Bed & Breakfast for under โฌ80 a night for a double will be rare. You should count on โฌ100 for a double room but that might be more in popular locations.
While hotels are usually limited to the centre of larger cities, bed & breakfasts are often located in smaller towns or on the outskirts of a city. These B&Bs are often a lot cheaper than their more central counterparts.
Airbnbs in Belgium
Airbnb and other private accommodation apps are still widely popular in Belgium, although many of the listings are often B&Bs and boutique hotels.
Airbnbs are a great way to find accommodation in smaller towns, off the beaten path.
We recommend choosing a private Airbnb rental if you’re:
- looking for a more private option than a hotel or bed & breakfast
- travelling as a bigger group of family or friends
- looking for the most budget way to visit a destination and don’t mind being located a bit outside of the centre
You’ll find that there are many different options available (all over the country), ranging from shared rooms to whole apartments. All can be booked online.
Pro Tip: Check out VRBO for similar listings as Airbnb, they are often cheaper on that (lesser known but equally good) platform.
Camping in Belgium
Belgium also has several campsites available, which can be found all over the country.
Campsites are a great option if you enjoy the outdoors and are travelling with your own campervan, caravan or tent. If you don’t have a vehicle, it might be worth considering hiring one while you’re in Belgium. This can give you more freedom when travelling around the country.
Wild camping
Wild camping is prohibited in Belgium and comes with high fines.
Bivouac areas
However, thereโs one exception to the rule. In a so-called bivouac area (Dutch: bivakzone) you can put up your tent for free.
There are a couple of rules to follow:
- You have to be travelling on foot, by bike or by horse. You’re not allowed to arrive by car.
- Stay only 1 or 2 nights.
- Itโs forbidden to camp in a group. Thereโs a maximum of 3 tents and 10 people allowed on each site.
- Since you canโt book a spot in advance, bivouac camping is first come first serve.
- Expect very little comfort and leave no trace when you leave.
- Some bivouac areas have more rules (f.e. on arrival and departure times)
Bivakzone.be is a website that collects information about all bivouac areas in Belgium. Itโs written in Dutch, but each area page has a short translation in English.
Private camping
It might not feel entirely like wild camping, but Campspace offers camping spots for tents, campers, and caravans in peopleโs gardens or on a farmerโs empty field. Some locations are completely off-grid while others come with sanitary provisions and will feel more like a small-scale campground.
Campspace also offers other unique accommodation in Belgium such as tiny houses, yurts or treehouses.
Campings
There are a ton of official campsites available in Belgium as it is something very popular amongst the locals.
Campsites are very diverse: from large ones with many utilities to charming small-scale ones. From those that cater to families with kids’ clubs and pools to the more fancy ones meant for an upscale public.
When looking for a campsite, make sure to check the website first to see if there are any special restrictions or conditions that you need to be aware of (like no fires).
1 night with 2 adults camping in a tent, caravan or camper and coming by car will cost around โฌ25-32.
Use Campingnavigator with its great filter option to find the best campsite in Belgium for you and your family or friends!
Glamping
Many campsites in Belgium also offer some form of glamping. You can discover unique stays in a shepherdโs hut, a Mongolian yurt or a tiny house. They usually donโt come with their own sanitary means, which is why itโs still seen as camping, just a tad more glamorous.
Campspace and Airbnb are particularly great platforms for finding awesome glamping spots!
Holiday parks in Belgium
There are many holiday villages in Belgium, such as Sunparks , Centerparks and Roompot . These bungalow parks are great places to stay, with plenty of activities for the whole family.
Something typical about holiday parks is that there’s often a subtropical swimming paradise to enjoy with the kids. Having your own cottage is useful, especially if you’re travelling as a larger family or if you have little ones that still need naps.
You can book a weeklong stay for 4 people for as little as โฌ400 but during the Belgian school holidays, this might go up to โฌ1500+.
Vacation homes in Belgium
If you’re looking for a weekend, midweek or longer stay with family or friends, renting a vacation home is a wonderful option.
Whether you’re looking for a quaint cottage in the countryside or a luxurious villa near the beach, vacation homes in Belgium offer something for everyone.
Many vacation homes have such incredible facilities that you might not want to leave your vacation rental at all. But with so much to see and do in this beautiful country, it’s well worth exploring the surroundings too!
The website Gรฎtes de Wallonie gathers all vacation homes in Wallonia (vacation homes are called gรฎtes in French and vakantiehuis in Dutch).
They have an extremely pleasant website to browse for the perfect vacation home. Definitely check their ‘themed holidays’ section that allows you to select gรฎtes with an indoor pool, that are accessible with a wheelchair or that are pet-friendly (to name a few) in just one click.
Another great platform to check is Nature House. This website lists all cottages in Belgium that are located in stunning spots, in the middle of nature. they are often much more special and unique accommodations rather than an average vacation home.
The last place where you can definitely score a great vacation home is Belvilla.
Farm stays in Belgium
Farm stays in Belgium are becoming increasingly popular as a way to experience the country’s countryside and culture.
Farm holidays
Staying at an active farm is a great holiday, especially if you’re travelling to Belgium with kids. You’ll get to experience the livestock, learn about the farming process and maybe even take a cooking class!
Farm stays usually come with breakfast and dinner, as well as access to the animals, a playground and other facilities.
Volunteering on a farm
Guests can choose to stay on working farms, often with the opportunity to help out with the daily tasks, and get a taste of rural life. In return for a couple of hours of work, you get your stay for free. Food is often included as well. A worldwide favourite is Wwoof but WorkAway is a great alternative if you’re interested in this type of accommodation.
This is definitely the most recommended way if you want to immerse yourself in the Belgian culture and/or visit the country on a shoestring.

The most visited tourist attractions in Bruges are the Markt, a large central square lined with shops and restaurants, and the Belfry, a tower with a view of the city. Other notable sights include the Church of Our Lady, the Burg, and the Windmills.
Bruges is small enough to not consider staying anywhere else than in the historical city centre. This area is also generally more lively, with more restaurants and bars.
However, if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere or want to stay where the majority of the locals live, you may want to stay in one of the quieter neighbourhoods outside of the city centre.
