4 Best Antwerp Bike Tours (+1 Super Fun Alternative)

Trying out the best Antwerp bike tours in 2024? I got you covered!

Exploring Antwerp by bike is one of my favorite things to do. I lived in this beautiful city for eight years and know it very well. When I was a student at Antwerp University, I used to bike every day.

My route was from Antwerp Linkeroever to the university in the historical center. This experience helped me find the best spots in the city.

Antwerp is a special place with a mix of old and new. It’s relatively small, so it’s perfect for biking. It’s flat too, luckily.

I have found some great Antwerp bike tours that show different parts of the city. These tours are good for anyone, whether you bike a lot or just sometimes.

During a 2 or 3-hour tour, you’ll be able to get a pretty complete image of the city, which makes a bike tour perfect for first-time visitors or if you’re short on time.

Is Antwerp bike-friendly?

As someone who lived in Antwerp for eight years, I can personally vouch for how bike-friendly this city is.

Outside the historic centre, it’s filled with bike lanes that make getting around on two wheels super easy and safe.

These paths are marked and mostly separate from car traffic, so you don’t have to worry about navigating through busy roads.

Within the historic centre, you’ll find a mix of pedestrian streets, cobblestone streets and bigger, busy roads without bike lanes – so, this will require a bit more attention.

Be especially on the lookout for pedestrians and e-kickscooters. But don’t let this scare you. You’ll see bicycles everywhere in Antwerp. So hop on and start exploring!

Plus, Antwerp is mostly flat – a big plus if you’re not into uphill cycling!

I’ve biked to just about every corner of this city, and it’s always been a breeze.

It’s one of the best things to do I love most about living here – you can pedal your way around, seeing the sights in the most laid-back way possible.

What to bring on a bicycle tour

When heading out on a bicycle tour in Antwerp, it’s important to pack smartly to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable ride. Here’s a quick checklist of what to bring along:

📌 Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key, especially if you’re out exploring for a few hours.

📌 Comfortable Clothing: Wear clothes that won’t restrict your movement. Layers are always a great idea.

📌 Hat and Gloves: From mid-autumn through to mid-spring, bring a hat and gloves. Trust me, your ears and hands will thank you, especially when the wind picks up!

📌 Snacks: Bring along some light snacks for energy, like fruit or granola bars.

📌 Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses, especially in the brighter months.

📌 Camera or Smartphone: You’ll want to capture the beautiful sights of Antwerp.

📌 Small Backpack: A backpack is handy for carrying your items, but keep it light so it’s not a burden while you ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, biking around Antwerp is very safe. The city is well-equipped with dedicated bike lanes and signage and it’s mostly flat. However, as in any urban area, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busier parts like the city centre. Be aware of e-kickscooters and pedestrians that might step in front of you suddenly.

There are no areas in Antwerp that you should avoid. Pay extra attention when you’re biking on the cobblestone, pedestrian streets in the historical centre or on the pedestrian shopping street De Meir – especially on a Saturday it can get very busy and people will walk anywhere without looking. Oh and also pay attention when crossing the tram tracks, they can make you slip.

Yes, you can bring your bike on trains in Antwerp. However, there’s an additional bike fee, and during peak hours, space for bikes can be limited. Also, keep in mind that many of the (older) trains have 2 or 3 steps and a pretty narrow door, so getting on the train with your bike might be a challenge.

No, a bike helmet is not legally required in Antwerp (or in Belgium in general). You’ll also see very few people wearing them. It’s mostly common for kids. But it’s better to be safe than sorry, so wear them.
